The Sandusky scandal still has a lot of questions that need to be answered. One question that keeps coming to my mind is why was everyone protecting Sandusky. As recently as this week, there were numerous reports that Sandusky’s former daughter-in-law Jill Thomas does not want Sandusky around her child. The reason for this is because Thomas believes that her son may have been abused by Sandusky. Thomas according to this ABCNews report http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/02/sandusky-daughter-in-law-hes-not-safe-for-any-children/ reported inappropriate behavior to the police and there was not enough evidence to prosecute.
Now here’s where my questions come in about Sandusky, why did the police not investigate more. I can see if this was the first mention of Sandusky molestation incidents, but it was not. In 1998 the State College Police eavesdropped on a conversation where Sandusky admitted to showering with a child. After the boy’s mother reported Sandusky to the authorities. Ok, again another question how many people would admit on police tape that they have showered with kids not at least be looked at more closely by the police. Coincidently, Sandusky retires from Penn State in 1999. Again why does Penn State just not wash their hands of Sandusky at this point, they continue to grant him access to the facilities and where he continues to bring children. Then a janitor catches Sandusky in the shower with another young boy, doing inappropriate things again. The janitor tells his immediate supervisor, the supervisor does not do anything, but tells the temp janitor employee to make a report. I can’t help but think why again the supervisor did not feel the need to act on it immediately. Was he scared of Sandusky, what the football program represented, I just do get why again Sandusky event was just swept under the rug again.
Then happens the Mike McQuery event and then Joe Paterno tells AD Tim Curley ,VP of Finance Gary Schultz, his knowledge of the events. Here’s what I can’t understand for the life of me why would Curley and Schultz risk their reputation, their livelihood, and their families and not take immediate action and then lie to the grand jury. What would they have had to lose, if they reported Sandusky to the authorities. Where they scared of something that Sandusky may have revealed, are there more predators besides Sandusky, at this point mainstream America has no idea who Sandusky is, why not just report him to the authorities. There has to be more to this story, I can not phantom why these two men would risks so much to protect Sandusky, it just doesn’t make sense. I’m the only one who has these questions?
Finally, in 2007 Sandusky has contact with another boy, the boy’s mother finds out, the school board finds out and the authorities finally go forward with the investigation and from there grand jury testimony and eventually charges are brought against Sandusky, Curley, and Schultz. I ask why now did the authorities listen?
